StarCoach, Starbucks’ Program to Coach Life Skills through Sports


Supported by BLISPI and ASA Foundation, StarCoach by Starbucks Indonesia is targeting 10 cities across Indonesia.

In partnership with the Asian Sports Academy (ASA), Starbucks Indonesia launched the StarCoach program in April 2018 to empower youth with life skills through edu-sports.

In partnership with the Asian Sports Academy (ASA), Starbucks Indonesia launched the StarCoach program in April 2018 to empower youth with life skills through edu-sports, mainly football and basketball. The program is expected to help more than 10,000 underprivileged youth between 12-14 years old from ten cities in Indonesia.

As part of Starbucks Global Month of Service (GMoS), partners (employees) are committed to participate in community service to support young people in their communities. Starbucks and ASA Foundation (Asian Sports Academy) joined forces to launch StarCoach – a ‘training of trainers’ (ToT) for partners (employees) to coach youth about life skills through edu-sports coaching clinics in two popular sports, football and basketball. The program will allow students in more than 10 cities to get benefit through this program; Jabodetabek, Bandung, Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Medan, Makassar, Pekanbaru, and Balikpapan.

Through this program that will run for seven months, Starbucks expects more than 10,000 youth between 12-14 years old to have opportunity to attain life skills training which will consist of self-confidence development, communication skills, coordination ability, understanding of equality and many other life skills. “Starbucks Indonesia will always be committed to improve our neighborhoods by addressing modern day needs in local communities. We are excited about the impact we’ve made, and what that means for partners (employees) and the community. Our partners can feel a sense of pride in the outcome and the impact they could bring to their communities,” said Anthony Cottan, Director of Starbucks Indonesia.

Lee Hawkins, Founder of ASA Foundation, adds “StarCoach is intended to develop teamwork and leadership skills among participants, with an active and fun approach that will help them succeed better in school and home. We are delighted to work with Starbucks knowing this partnership would greatly benefit Indonesian youth everywhere.” Supported by Badan Liga Sepakbola Pelajar Indonesia (BLISPI), Starbucks Indonesia and ASA Foundation, StarCoach uses sports based life skills to empower Starbucks staff volunteers together with local school teachers, community coaches and students in 10 targeted cities across Indonesia. “We hope this program will help foster community spirit and open new opportunities and aspirations for youth,” he closes his statement.
